Green fever swept the underclassmen at Lyme-Old Lyme High School on April 5th 2017, as teams geared up for the annual Pickleball Invitational Tournament. Pickleball, a sport played with wooden paddles, containing elements from tennis, badminton, and table tennis, is a unit in physical education that freshman and sophomores alike look forward to each year. The students, playing in teams of two, participated in each of the individual class tournaments during the week leading up to the invitational. Only some, however, were lucky enough to receive a formal invitation to the tournament. The best or most spirited teams from each class were chosen in order to insure the highest level of competition possible.

The Pickleball Invitational was dominated by sophomore competitors, as only eight freshman moved on to the next level of competition. The participants walked into the gymnasium at 12:25 on the afternoon of April 5th; each team hoping to win the first place trophy, an enormous jar of pickles. The tournament went on for almost two hours, as participants wearing the traditionally “lucky” color green battled it out during each of their three minute matches. After about an hour and a half of play, the finalists had been determined. Eliminated participants, such as semi-finalists Emily O’Brien, Gary Bocian, Quinn Romeo, and Mya Johnson, and other observers gathered around one court to watch the final game. The sophomore duo Kellie Sablone and Britney DeRoehn competed against freshman Brady Sheffield and sophomore Jack Bocian in the the final match. Sheffield and Bocian were able to defeat their competitors with a final score of 6-2. Sablone and DeRoehn had hoped to be the first all female team to win, but were unable to match the talent of their opponents.
