EZ: After the team finished second last year at this competition, I was surprised to hear from you that the team was shooting for another second place finish rather than going for first. Why was that?

MB: Last year we placed second, losing to Woodstock Academy. Woodstock trains elite gymnasts and has several All American gymnasts on their team. They have also won the class S state championship for the past five years in a row. Since we know our competition sets such a high bar, we focus on securing second over all of the other teams, and closing the gap between us and Woodstock.

EZ:  Describe what exactly the gymnastics team does. What events do you do at competitions? What do your practices look like?

MB: The gymnastic team meets three times a week. This is untraditional compared to other sports that meet six times a week because of the rigorous training and the amount of endurance needed to get through a practice. For girls, you compete four events: vault, bars, beam, and floor. A minimum of four girls and a maximum of six compete each event. The top four scores on each event combine together create your all-around score.

EZ: How did it feel to achieve this as a senior knowing it’s your last time performing for LOLHS on this particular team?

MB: I was proud of myself and my teammates for placing second at the state championship. We worked hard, and it was very rewarding, after four years of high school gymnastics, to finish with another second place title.

EZ: Are you going to continue gymnastics in college?

MB: Depending on where I end up and what sports the school offers, it is possible that I could join a club gymnastics team.
