On November 3rd, Lyme-Old Lyme High School hosted multiple teachers, therapists, experts and the like to operate a series of workshops available to all students in which to enroll. In Vice Principal, Jeanne Manfredi’s, words, the purpose of Wellness Day was to “provide students with opportunities to learn about strategies or different things they can do” to manage their stress and to help them “lead a healthier, more balanced life.” The event was organized by the Safe School Climate Committee after months of discussion regarding the stress levels of high school students and how teenagers needed to “balance the ride”. After a morning of shortened classes, staff and students filed into the auditorium with curiosity and skepticism. Students and staff previously signed up for their preferred classes, as well as alternates, and had their schedules with three, forty minute, periods in hand. First, there was a brief introduction and the keynote speaker, stand-up comedian Tony Liberati performed. Students then attended workshops around the school, including self defense, working with essential oils, suicide prevention, African drumming, yoga, forest walking, zumba, and the benefits of journaling and blogging. The overall response was positive and, for many, the afternoon provided further educated on certain topics of wellness and introduced stress relief outlets. “Everything at the moment seems so overwhelmingly huge and you can just step back and know [that] it’s going to be okay” says Mrs. Manfredi. Wellness Day is one of many efforts put forth by the school and community to help students improve their mental and physical well being; one of which being a homework policy to limit the after school workload, and access to extra help. Mrs. Manfredi predicts that Wellness Day, with a few tweaks, will become an annual event for the school to enjoy.
