Orchestrated by Amnesty International, an organization made up of millions who take action and fight for human rights around the world, Write For Rights is an annual event in which anyone in Lyme or Old Lyme may partake.

In the words of Amnesty International, “Sometimes a letter can change someone’s life. That’s the premise of Write for Rights, Amnesty’s global letter-writing campaign. We’ve been doing it for 15 years and today, it’s the world’s biggest human rights event.

Every December, Amnesty supporters across the globe will write millions of letters for those whose basic human rights are being attacked. They are people like you, continuing a long tradition of writing letters to right some of the world’s biggest wrongs.” (amnesty.org)

Each year, Amnesty chooses a select number of people from around the globe whose human rights are being violated and calls upon human rights supporters to write to governments, prime ministers, authorities, or whomever have brought about such injustices.

Each person that Amnesty writes for has their own lives full of persistence and struggle. Their stories can be found at Amnesty International’s website: https://www.amnesty.org/en/get-involved/write-for-rights/.

You can help contribute to Write For Rights by either visiting amnesty.org to quickly sign a petition or by signing petitions and letters during first and second lunches on this coming Monday, December 11th. In addition, you can attend the event at The First Congregational Church of Old Lyme on December 10th at 10:00 to 11:00 or from 12:00 through 1:00 to write letters directly to governments and officials demanding justice for the ten people/groups chosen this year. This is an opportunity to make a difference in the world and save lives. If you have any additional questions, visit the Amnesty website or email Mr. McGannon.
