Concert Chorus Performance of “Requiem”
On Tuesday, April 12th, Concert Chorus performed “Requiem,” a large-scale choral piece by English composer John Rutter, at 7:30pm in the high school auditorium. Rutter wrote this fascinating thirty-five minute work in 1986 originally as a tribute to his late father, which was to be performed at his funeral mass. The definition of requiem is a mass for the resting of newly deceased souls, most common in the Roman Catholic Church. The LOLHS performance featured two soprano soloists, Megan Cushman and Campbell Mann, along with three LOLHS instrumentalists: Immy Welles on flute, Shannon Nosal on glockenspiel (similar to a xylophone), and Gabe Barclay on timpani (type of drum). These students were also accompanied by professional musicians such as Johanna Lamb on oboe, Julie Ribchinsky from CCSU and Connecticut Trio on cello, Megan Sesma from the U.S. Coast Guard Band on the harp, and Donna Stamm on the organ. It was a beautiful concert with a generous turnout. Attached is the link to the recording of the concert. The first track is Select Singers’ performance of “Famine Song,” and the remaining tracks are the different movements from “Requiem.” The solo tracks are number four (Campbell Mann-Pie Jesu), and track eight (Megan Cushman-Lux Aeterna.)
