Hope and Olive

Hope+and+Olive

Last Saturday 10/7, I was spending the day in Massachusetts going to the Yankee Candle Village and Kringle Candle, a little tradition I have. One of my favorite parts of traveling two hours up to Massachusetts is not just the drive through the fall foliage, but also eating at Chandler’s, the restaurant at Yankee that serves great fall comfort food. However, when I called to make reservations, I discovered that it closed in the spring! Although I was upset that I would not be reliving my beloved annual tradition, I decided to make reservations at The Farm Table, the restaurant at Kringle. However, when I got there, I discovered that I have never heard of, or tried, half the choices on the menu. The meals themselves sounded good, but the side dishes and sauces did not (I like hanger steak, but not with corn succotash, chickpea fries, and chimichurri). So, I decided to try Hope and Olive, a cute little place in the center of Greenfield. The menu seemed more palatable than that of The Farm Table, and many people recommended it. The restaurant itself looked small on the outside, but it was quite large on the inside. In addition, the decor was very modern, kind of giving me an artsy vibe feel. Although the restaurant opened at 5:00, all the tables were full by 5:30. The menu included food from many different cultures, from Asian to Mexican. Due to the many choices, my dining companion and I got the crab rangoon dip with wonton crisps and crudites. The dip was very hot and had a bite to it, and also contained lumps of crab meat. I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed the appetizer so much, and I honestly would have been content with just the dip. For our meals, I ordered the paella with shrimp, scallops, mussels, chorizo, rice, veggies, and saffron aioli, while my dining companion ordered the meatloaf with garlic mashed potatoes and a veggie variety. Both of us were very impressed with the dishes’ portions, as well as how tasty the meals were. I wish I had a bigger stomach so I could have ordered more food! I would definitely recommend stopping here if you are in the area and if you have a comprehensive palate. My Yum Sum rating is a 4.5/5.
