What Happens in High School Bowl?

On Tuesday mornings, students gather in Mr. Elliot’s room to answer trivia questions. They range anywhere from chemical formulas and European rulers to Brangelina. They are preparing for High Schoool Bowl competitions, which happen about once a month.

These competitions are especially hard to prepare for considering the number of topics that need to be understood. However, sometimes questions are repeated between competitions and the students are ready to answer. In High School Bowl, there are two types of questions: toss-ups and bonuses. The toss-ups can be answered by anyone and there is no penalty for getting the question wrong, except that your team can’t answer that question again. However, if you answer before the moderator is done asking the question and you get it wrong, your team loses five points. If you answer the question right, your team gets a ten points and a bonus, a set of three questions on a specific topic (for example, battles of the Civil War). Each bonus is worth five points, but if you get all of them, an extra five points are given to your team. Teams can confer on the bonuses, but not on toss-ups.

The next match is on November 1, 2018.
