3, 2, 1… GO! Physics Teacher Battle

3, 2, 1… GO! Physics Teacher Battle

This week we interviewed two of Lyme-Old Lyme’s physics teachers: Mr. Brett Lillie and Mr. Richard Fisler. We set out to find their opinions on a wide variety of topics including a bit of physics trivia! Who will be the reigning champion of this teacher battle? Let’s find out!

Let’s start with Mr. Lillie. Here are his responses:

  • Chocolate of vanilla?

“Well, vanilla.”

  • What was your SAT score?

I don’t know, I finished school early.”

  • Define Velocity.

“Let me see how I can answer this correctly… moving a distance at a certain time and in a certain direction.”

  • Should the Death Penalty be abolished?

“Well, I don’t know how to answer that…”

  • Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?

“Yes.”

  • Dogs or cats?

“Dogs.”

  • Whats the best music genre? Favorite song?

“Whatever genre is Bad Bad Leroy Brown by Jim Croce.”  (That’s Blues/Folk)

  • Skirts or pants? What about kilts?

“I like kilts, but i’ve never worn one.”

  • Whats your spirit animal?

“I think I would be a koala bear.”

  • Would you rather have a mullet or a pony tail?

“A mullet of course!”

  • Marvel or DC?

“I’ll say Marvel.”

  • Does pineapple belong on pizza?

“Yes!”

  • What british physicist is credited with discovering the electron?

“Um, I think Schrödinger, right? He was german.”  (Incorrect: J.J. Thompson.)

  1. What sort of electricity is created when you rub a balloon on your hair?

“Static electricity.”

  1. How much can you bench?

About 250 pounds.”

Initially, Mr. Lillie seemed very confident with his responses. He was especially sure of his answers to the questions about hair styles and the righteousness of pineapple on pizza! He put thought into his answer regarding the definition of velocity, making sure he would develop a simple response. He has a niche music taste that many can appreciate. However, Mr. Little got a physics trivia question incorrect. In response to the question, “What british physicist is credited with discovering the electron?” he responded “Schrödinger.” The correct answer is J.J. Thompson. Overall, Mr. Lillie had great responses!

Now let’s take a look at Mr. Fisler’s responses:

  • Chocolate of vanilla?

“Chocolate.”

  • What was your SAT score?

My last one was 1420.”

  • Define Velocity.

“Velocity is the rate of change in position.”

  • Should the Death Penalty be abolished?

“Excellent question.. yes.”

  • Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?

“Yes!”

  • Dogs or cats?

“Dogs.”

  • Whats the best music genre? Favorite song?

“Great question! The best genre.. blues. The best song is, At Last by Etta James.”

  • Skirts or pants? What about kilts?

“I have worn all of them: a skirt, a pant and a kilt. I think that kilts are practical, very useful and a versatile fabric. I’m going with kilts.”

  • Whats your spirit animal?

“I think I’m a porcupine.”

  • Would you rather have a mullet or a pony tail?

“Pony tail!”

  • Marvel or DC?

“What a question…  Although I grew up with DC, Im going with Marvel because of Spiderman.”

  1. Does pineapple belong on pizza?

“Hmm, yes! But it’s not pizza unless it has tomato sauce.”

  • What british physicist is credited with discovering the electron?

“Thompson!”

  1. What sort of electricity is created when you rub a balloon on your hair?

“Static electricity caused by friction.”

  1. How much can you bench?

“I know I can bench the bar. As of today, I think I could bench Willa. But I know I can bench 250 Chips-a-hoy cookies!”

Mr. Fisler seemed a bit hesitant at first with some of the questions. He took a moment to really think about his answers, including the questions about the death penalty and superheroes. He even has experience as a kilt-wearer! Like Mr. Lillie, Mr. Fisler has excellent music taste, by choosing the blues as the best music genre. However, unlike Mr. Lillie, he answered all of the physics trivia correctly! It is still important to take into consideration that he can bench less than Mr. Lillie. Another great round of responses!

Now it’s time for you to decide: Who do you think won this teacher battle?
